And though both are really great games, their online mulitiplayer base is shrinking, their current popularity only maintaining due to nostalgia and it will not be long before you cannot play any multiplayer PS3 games unless there is an update to make someone's console act as a host, to which PSN would still have to be willing to do the relaying or a game allows you to use a custom server like a few of the older PC games or a few emulators do. If yes, do not go over 1TB as some people have reported that 2TB hard drives cause issues. Also, do not worry about grabbing a solid- state hard drive for its "speed." The original hard drive that came with your PS3 would have been a SATA I and so a solid-state hard drive versus a SATA III hard drive will only save a a few seconds at the most at load screens. Think of it this way: a PS2 uses USB 1.1 ports and so a USB 3.0 storage device cannot transfer data at its highest speeds; SATA I, II, III, and solid-state hard drives behave this way as well; you are only as fast as the slowest half of the hardware. Next thing we need to consider is if you are planning to upgrade to a larger hard drive, are you interested in keeping your game data and saves or do you want to start from scratch? Starting from scratch is easy, especially if you already updated the PS3 to firmware 4.88. However, using the backup utility may result in issues like getting an "80010083" error, to which the "almighty Internet" cannot seem to agree on what to do about it or is just a bunch of "copy/paste nonsense." Pick one... A. Start Clean Starting clean is the easiest method. All you have to do is download a copy of the PS3 firmware version 4.88, to which can be found in various places besides the official ones, and then place the downloaded "PS3UPDAT.PUP" file on a USB storage drive like so: "PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP". Next, replace the hard drive with the new one straight out of the package, no need to format, plug in all the necessary cables, connect a PS3 controller, plug in the USB storage device with the "PS3UPDAT.PUP" file and turn it on. You will get some sort of error message with part of it mentioning holding down Select and Start buttons. Hold down the Select and Start buttons to have the PS3 format the hard drive. After it formats the hard drive, you will get another message, probably mentioning holding down the Select and Start buttons again for five seconds and may have to select the USB storage device to let it know where to look for the "PS3UPDAT.PUP" file to which will install things to make the PS3 functional again. And a t some point, you will be taken through a setup process as if you are setting up the PS3 for the first time. B. Backup and Restore Before starting, you need to know that your currently working PS3 hard drive is encrypted and will not let you simply make a backup using disk copying tools such as 'dd'. Also, GParted sees the PS3 partition as "unallocated" and so doing things like copying a partition to a new and larger hard drive and then expanding the partition will not work. You also cannot simply take out a PS3 hard drive and put it in another and expect it to work as only that particular PS3 can decrypt what is on the hard drive. Backup ------ To backup your game data, saves, and so forth, you will need to use the Backup Utility in the System Settings. You will also need to backup these files to a FAT32 formatted USB hard drive that is as at least as large as the amount of stuff occupying the PS3 hard drive as the backup processes creates files without any compression. In other words, if you have a 120GB hard drive in the PS3 and have filled it up almost completely full, then you will need a 120GB or more USB storage device to backup onto. If the backup fails with a "80010083" error message, I have no idea how to help you as I have yet to figure this out myself. The best thing you can do is at the very least copy your game saves to the USB storage device and any other images, videos, music, etc. and then add them back after using the "Starting Clean" option. This also means losing a game's updates and downloaded content if you have forgotten your PSN password. Restore ------- If you successfully created a backup, restoring is just as easy. Do the same steps like in "Start Clean," but afterwards, use the Restore option from the System Settings with the USB storage device you used to do the backup plugged in. You can remove the default username created during the clean install afterwards. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ | |__ _(_) | |__ _ _ ___ __ _| |_(_)_ _ __ _ (_)___ __ _ ___ | || / _` | | | '_ \ '_/ -_) _` | / / | ' \/ _` | | (_-< / _` (_-< \__/\__,_|_|_|_.__/_| \___\__,_|_\_\_|_||_\__, | |_/__/ \__,_/__/ |___/ ___ __ _ ____ _ __ _ ___ / -_) _` (_-< || | / _` (_-<_ _ _ (Do not let the number of steps \___\__,_/__/\_, | \__,_/__(_|_|_) discourage you; it is easy; if you |__/ are GNU/Linux user, you've got this) Jailbreaking a PS3 with firmware version 4.88 is as easy as going to a website on the PS3 and letting that site use some exploits to do the jailbreaking. No joke. But lets do a few things first... 1. Go to Settings --> Date and Time Settings --> Date and Time and set the time to "Set via Internet" 2. Toggle off Automatic updates via Settings --> System Settings --> Automatic Update 3. Make sure to setup an Internet connection. 4. Open the Internet Browser and do the follwing: 1. Allow cookies 2. Turn on JavaScript 3. Set Confirm Browser Close to Off 4. Set the default home page the "about:blank" or "Use Blank Page" 5. Delete cookies 6. Delete search history 7. Delete cache 8. Delete Authentication Information 5. Close Internet Browser 6. Open Internet Browser and press the Start button to go to 'ps3xploit.com 7. Add this page to your bookmarks using the Select button. 8. Use the left analog stick on the PS3 controller to go to the top of the ps3xploit.com page to where it says "BGToolset" and select "Mail Site". When asked if you want to run the plugin, select "Do Not Display Again" and then select Yes. 9. Use the Select button to bookmark the loaded page. 10. You will hear three beeps at some point and that means that the BGToolset is active. HOWEVER, if you get a weird red text error message on the page, close the Internet Browser, open it back up again and then open what you just bookmarked and repeat step 8. 11. Click on the "Flash Memory Manager" tab. The site will tell you if you have a PS3 capable of installing custom firmware. There will be a green check mark if you do and a red "X" if you do not. The super slim models will not work with this method and you will need to use the PS3Hen method, which will not be covered in this tutorial. 12. Insert a FAT32 formatted USB hard drive into the most right USB port on the PS3. 13. Put the cursor over where is says "Flash Memory" and select with the "X" button and select the "Save Flash Memory Backup" option. When asked, navigate to the "/dev_usb000" as that is where the mentioned USB hard drive in step 12 is located. Use the "Save" button to start the backup process. When finished, use the "Close" button. This will create a "dump.hex" file on the USB hard drive; it is not that large, maybe around 16MB or so. 14. Remove the USB storage device from the PS3 and plug it into a computer. Leave the PS3 turned on and where it is. 15. Now, we need to download a tool called "PyPS3Checker"; however, because we are using GNU/Linux, we cannot simply used the nicely packaged "standalone" zip file on the GitHub page. So, the easiest thing to do is to grab what we need using 'git' like so: git clone https://github.com/littlebalup/PyPS3tools 16. Navigate to the "PyPS3Check" directory and make sure to allow the "checker.py" and "checker_py3.py" files to run as programs. This is typically done by right-clicking them, go to Properties, Permissions, and then toggling "Allow this file to run as a program," or something similar. You can also use something like 'chmod +x /path/to/checker.py' in a terminal. Do not worry about running this program just yet. 17. While at the computer, you will need to download the custom firmware that you plan to use on your PS3. Go to https://www.psx-place.com/threads/4-88-2-evilnat-cobra-8-3-custom-firmware-cfw-cex-released.32057/ or https://www.brewology.com/?p=4627 and click the "CFW EVILNAT 4.88 COBRA 8.3 [CEX]" link to download. Make sure to confirm the MD5SUM after download by running 'md5sum /path/to/CFW 4.88 Evilnat COBRA 8.3 [CEX].rar'; the string of numbers and letters should match what is on the website. 18. We will also want a file manager to use after the custom firmware is installed. For this, we will use 'multiMAN' from https://store.brewology.com/multiman.php and click the multiMAN base link to download. 19. Now, we will run the "PyPS3Checker" program like so in a terminal... cd PyPS3Checker python checker.py /path/to/dump.hex ...This will run a series of checks; you want the "Number of dangers" and "Number of warnings" to both be zero before moving on. If you do get any warnings, you should try redumping again like in step 13. If you still keep getting warnings, I do not recommend continuing but you do whatever at your own risk, not that you are not doing that anyway. If you get a Python-related error, then try running the 'checker_py3.py' instead. 20. Keep the "dump.hex" file somewhere safe just in case but you probably wont need it. 21. On a FAT32 formatted USB hard drive, add the following directories like so: "PS3/UPDATE". This is where we will add the custom firmware after extracting so as to finally be "PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP"; sound familiar? 22. Paste the multiMAN PKG file to the root of the same USB hard drive mentioned in the previous step. 23. Plug the USB hard drive into the right-most port of the PS3. 24. While back on the PS3, use the pointer to select the "Flash Memory Patch" option and then select "Load Patch via HTTPS". Select the Close button when finished. 25. Select the "Flash Memory Patch" again and then select "Apply loaded Patch". When prompted, select Yes. Select the Close button when finished. 26. Use the circle button on the PS3 controller to close the Internet Browser and power the PS3 off and the power it back on. This is so that the Patch can take effect. 27. When the PS3 is back on, go to System --> System Update and use the "Update via Storage Media". Use Ok after the custom firmware update available is displayed. The system may restart a few times during the installation. 28. Do not be tempted to sign into a PSN account; if you do, there is a very high chance of getting banned or worse. 29. Go to the Game tab and select Package Manager --> Install Package Files --> Standard and then select the multiMAN PKG file to install it. Running multiMAN for the first time will install a few things it needs to run correctly. ____ _ __ ______ _ __ __ _ __ __/ / /_(_) |/ / _ | / |/ / / ' \/ // / / __/ / /|_/ / __ |/ / [multiMAN] /_/_/_/\_,_/_/\__/_/_/ /_/_/ |_/_/|_/ multiMAN is the "goto" file manager for most PS3 jailbreakers. This is something I have noticed a lot of people doing while researching things. COPYING A BACKUP (ISO) TO PS3 FROM USB HARD DRIVE: -------------------------------------------------- Quick Warning: You cannot copy any file to a FAT32 filesystem that is larger than 4GB; so, if an ISO is 5GB in size, you will have to use another option or split it into multiple files. HOWEVER, jailbreaking a PS3 and getting multiMAN installed will give you NTFS support, which allows >4GB files. 1. Make sure the USB hard drive is FAT32 or NTFS 2. Create a "GAMES" (all caps) directory at the root of the USB. 3. Paste the backup to the "GAMES" directory. I would like to note that it may be a good idea to create a directory for each backup. You may need to run the Refresh option for the backup to show. 7. mulitMAN should recognize that your backup is on a USB drive and is split using "USB" and "split" tags. 8. Use "X" button to launch the backup; however, you will be asked if you would like to "install required data" to the hard drive and this will recombine the files into one again but only as a "cache," meaning, you will still need to have the backup on the USB to play it, even though it copied files over to the PS3. However, this may only apply to game.psarc files and not ISO's. If you try to load a backup using multiMAN but it only loads a blank screen, turn off the PS3 and turn it back on. Load multiMAN and then use the triangle button while the "troubled backup" is selected to list some options and pick the "Permissions" option to correct some things and it should hopefully then work. ___ ____ _____ / | ____ ____ / / /___ / ___/____ __ _____ / /| | / __ \/ __ \/ / / __ \ \__ \/ __ `/ | / / _ \ / ___ |/ /_/ / /_/ / / / /_/ / ___/ / /_/ /| |/ / __/ /_/ |_/ .___/\____/_/_/\____/ /____/\__,_/ |___/\___/ ____/_/ __ /_ __/___ ____ / / / / / __ \/ __ \/ / / / / /_/ / /_/ / / [Apollo Save Tool] /_/ \____/\____/_/ You will need this tool if you started from a fresh install as you cannot use game saves from "other PS3" systems. This tool can also unlock and resign trophies and import/export PS2 memory cards, which is very helpful because of the way you have to trick the PS3 into thinking PS2 games are "PS2 Classics," which are encrypted. And if you are just plain lazy or terrible at video games, you can also use this tool to download game saves. Download: https://github.com/bucanero/apollo-ps3/releases If you need to resign a bunch of save files, open the Apollo Save Tool, go to HDD Saves, select "Bulk Save Management," and use "Resign & Unlock all Saves" option. However, the system did not fix any missing cover art for you, which can be set to "automatic" from within multiMAN's XMB (Games) menu. All you have to do is find a JPEG image that you want to represent the cover art of the backup and put it in the same directory as the backup, using the same file-name as the BIN file. This also applies to all of the other ISO-related directories except PS2 and PS3 would most likely use actual ISO files instead of BIN/CUE files, though there are some exceptions for a few PS2 backups. BUT, let's say you have a PS3 backup in folder format. These backups typically already include their own cover art but there are instances in which they are not quite correct. For example, "Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare" is an extension for the game "Red Dead Redemption" that could have been either downloaded, bought as a separate disc, or have been included along with "Red Dead Redemption" if you owned the Game of the Year Edition. Now, let's say you took your disc copy of "Red Dead Redemption" and copied it to your hard drive and then did the same to "Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare." The files that control the cover art on Undead Nightmare are the same as the main game's. To fix this, look for "ICON0.PNG" and "PIC1.PNG" files within the "/dev_hdd0/GAMES/YourBackup/PS3_GAME" directory and replace them, making sure that the files you replace them with are the same size, format, and in all capital letters.
