Teletext was data that used to be transmitted along with analog signals
that could be interpreted as human-readable text with the help of a
translator box. It wasn't too fancy, but with the help of microcomputers
such as the BBC Micro ("Beeb"), it could display colorful text and some
minor decorations. People could use this system to look up sports,
weather, stocks, news, etc. and all for free and as early as 1974. 
However, thanks to most signals going digital, services like Ceefax in
the UK were put to an end, leaving most to use online emulation or
develop projects such as Teefax.
