How to make an engraved or popped-out artistic silhoutte in GIMP Note: The following is a link to a video and a set of instructions that are not by TheOuterLinux. I wanted to give people a written option just in case something either happens to the URL in the future or are using a web browser and/or system that will not play the video. Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0avxWurw-w 1. Assuming we are starting from scratch, right-click the one and only layer and make sure it has an alpha channel. 2. Paint the background of the image white or whatever color you prefer 3. Then, select the background color using the color select tool and then invert the selection, which will now have the main image selected instead (easier his way). 4. Delete the selected main image, leaving us only with a solid color and a blank silhoutte in the shape of the main image. 5. Add a transparent layer below the main layer. At this point you have a few options... 1. Select the transparent layer, use the bucket fill tool with pattern fill enabled, and then use a pattern to fill the transparent layer, leaving the main layer looking as if you filled the silhoutte with a pattern. [Or] 2. Select the transparent layer, go to Filters --> Render --> Clouds --> Plasma... with a turbulence of "3". You can then go even further with either of the previously mentioned options by right-clicking the top layer, go to Layer Effects and then use either Drop Shadow or Inner Shadow options.
